Normal Community to Honor Three Alumni at Service Today
NORMAL – Three individuals chosen by the Normal Community High School Alumni Association as the 2007-08 Distinguished Alumni will be recognized during baccalaureate services at 1 p.m. today at the high school. A public reception will follow in the high school Instructional Media Center.
Honorees are Carl Black, class of 1950; Patricia Preno Brown, class of 1960; and Linda Mehlberg Morris, class of 1967.
Black, a retired lieutenant colonel, enlisted in the Marine Corps after graduation from Illinois State Normal University and served as a naval aviator. His career included flying more than 300 F-4 combat missions in Vietnam.
Brown distinguished herself as a physical education instructor, coach and leader in experiential learning throughout her 45-year career.
A graduate of ISNU, Brown pursued further training in the area of outdoor and experiential education, working with students in Wyoming. The Wyoming Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance has honored her with numerous awards.
Morris, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Mehlberg of Bloomington, is the science curriculum coordinator for the Jefferson County School District, the largest district in Colorado.
She has been recognized with a number of national awards, including the National Science Teachers Association Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, and the Christa McAuliffe Fellowship.
