First Flight Musicians Win Honors
DARE COUNTY | First Flight Middle School students recently attended the Busch Gardens Music Showcase Festival, bringing home more awards and trophies than any other school at the competition.
The Performance/Concert Band earned a superior rating and first- place trophy in the middle school 1A division.
All That Jazz, with eight members, earned a superior rating and the first-place trophy in the Junior High division.
The seventh-grade jazz band received an excellent rating and a second place trophy in the middle school jazz ensemble division. Individual outstanding soloist awards were given to Andrew Sanchez and Jillian Tillett.
The eighth-grade jazz band received an excellent rating and the first-place trophy in the middle school jazz ensemble division. The brass section received an outstanding brass section award.
Currituck County
Teacher assistant of the year named
Laurie Edney was named Currituck County’s 2007-08 Teacher Assistant of the Year for District 1, which includes 15 counties, during the North Carolina Association of Teacher Assistants’ state conference.
Teacher receives certification
Title 1 teacher Kim Denby of Central Elementary School has received her Reading Recovery certification.
Teachers who earn this certification must undergo yearlong training under the supervision of a certified reading recovery trainer.
Candidates attend graduate credit classes each week through the training period and participate in “behind the glass” sessions where lessons with their students are observed and critiqued by the trainer and other classmates.
Disabilities act open for review
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA-Part B, Public Law 108.466) project is presently being amended. The project describes the special education programs that Currituck County Schools proposes for federal funding for the 2008-2009 school year.
The project is open for review and comments during the week of May 26, in the office of Charlotte H. Worley, director of Exceptional Children programs, 2986 Caratoke Hwy., Currituck.
Currituck Schools plans projects
Currituck County Schools is planning its federal projects to meet provisions of No Child Left Behind.
All private schools are invited to participate in the Title I – Targeted Student Assistance; Title II – Improving Teacher Quality; and Title V – Innovative Assistance Programs for the 2008-09 school year.

Students tapped for honor society
Manteo High School inducted students into the National Honor Society recently.
Those tapped were Tempest Daniels, Zoe Fawcett, Molly Guiley, Meredith Gwaltney, Morgan Hannell, Tess Harrell, Sammy Jo Hinnant, Brooke Jordan, Katie Lee, Harrison Lilley, Jessica Lowcher, Hayleigh Maher, Matt McGinnis, Kaitlyn Midgett, Mitzy Minton, Paige Parks, Arielle Petrey, Nikki Seward and Andrew Simansky.
Graduates have a celebration
The 150 graduates of the College of The Albemarle’s Dare County campus celebrated with a luncheon at Duck Woods Country Club.
This year’s class included 39 Dare County residents.
Group recognizes Manteo teacher
Manteo High School’s social studies chairwoman, Emile Cumpston, was recognized as the Daughters of the American Revolution North Carolina 2008 Outstanding American History Teacher during the Daughters of the American Revolution State Conference in Durham.
Cumpston was presented a framed certificate, a pin and a $500 check.
Bank honors Hatteras teacher
RBC Bank will present $500 in classroom cash to Cape Hatteras Elementary School teacher Molly Jo McKnight Barnes as part of its Tribute to Teachers program.
Barnes was one of 35 teachers from the southeast selected from more than 2,500 nominees for her commitment to excellence and the future of her students.
Hyde County
OSAT Students give certificate
Ocracoke Students Against Tobacco (OSAT) presented a tobacco- free school certificate to David Tolson, vice chairman of the Hyde County Schools Board of Education, during a recent PTA meeting.
The certificate was given in recognition of the Hyde County school board’s efforts to adopt a 100 percent tobacco-free school policy. The policy will go into effect on Aug. 1.
Pasquotank County
Student recognition set
Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools will hold its annual Student Recognition Program at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the multipurpose room at Pasquotank Elementary School.
The program will honor student accomplishments at regional, state and national level during the 2007-08 school year.
Perquimans County
Guthrie selected as teaching fellow
Perquimans County High School’s Mary Allen Guthrie has been selected as a North Carolina Teaching Fellows recipient.
The program provides a $6,500 per year scholarship for four years to 500 outstanding North Carolina high school seniors. Upon acceptance of the scholarship, the student agrees to teach for four years following graduation from college in a North Carolina public school or U.S. Government school in North Carolina.
She plans to attend Campbell University.
Senior awarded scholarship
Senior Michael Recardo Ross Jr. has been awarded the Perquimans High School SECU Foundation “People Helping People” scholarship.
Each North Carolina public high school receives a scholarship to be awarded to a senior. It is a four-year college scholarship for $10,000.
He plans to attend Elizabeth City State University to study in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Rural teachers receive grants
Fund for Teachers, a national education foundation based in Houston, has awarded $1,954,406 in grants to 489 teachers nationwide. This year, the foundation expanded its reach to some of the country’s most rural communities.
Courtesy of an anonymous donation, Fund for Teachers partnered with The Rural School and Community Trust, a nonprofit recognized for addressing the relationship between good schools and thriving rural communities, to award $52,941 in grants to 11 teachers from rural schools in North Carolina, Louisiana, Vermont and Maine.
Through these grants, teachers pursue learning around the globe. They receive individual grants of as much as $5,000 and team grants of as much as $10,000.
Cassandra Galbier of Ocracoke School plans to volunteer and travel through Costa Rica to study the Spanish language and Latin American culture while participating in conservation and community development work.
Alexandra Ellsesser and Debra Rook, both of Chowan Middle School, plan to volunteer with Care International in South Africa to interact with local culture, teach English and empower women in business.
