International Association of Law Schools to Hold Inaugural General Assembly

Posted on: Tuesday, 27 May 2008, 12:00 CDT

WASHINGTON, May 27 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Over 100 legal educators from more than 40 countries will attend the first General Assembly of the International Association of Law Schools (IALS) on May 29-30, 2008 in Montreal, Canada. The General Assembly is the ultimate authority of the newly formed IALS, whose mission includes fostering "mutual understanding of and respect for the world's varied and changing legal systems and cultures as a contribution to justice and a peaceful world."

"It is exciting to be part of the first General Assembly and our selection of a President, President-elect, and new Governing Board Members, who will continue to advance our mission," said Carl Monk, who served as the first President of the IALS. "Across the globe law schools are not only educating the next generation of lawyers, but also the next world leaders. As such, it is critical that law schools worldwide undertake to educate their students about different cultures and legal systems so that, as world leaders, they will act with sensitivity to those differences."

The General Assembly is being held in conjunction with an IALS educational program, Effective Techniques for Teaching about Other Cultures and Legal Systems (http://www.ialsnet.org/meetings/assembly/index.html). This one day workshop is a follow up on the very successful first IALS conference recently held at the Kenneth Wang School of Law at Soochow University in Suzhou, China: Learning from Each Other: Enriching the Law School Curriculum in an Interrelated World. All participants in the educational program were required to write a three to five page paper on teaching techniques about other cultures and legal systems, which will be posted on the IALS web site at http://www.ialsnet.org/.

LexisNexis has provided a grant to support global participation for both the General Assembly and the educational program.

The International Association of Law Schools (IALS) is a non-profit organization founded in 2005 with a membership of 176 educational institutions, associations, and legal educators from 49 countries. Its members are committed to the proposition that the quality of legal education in any society is improved when students learn about other cultures and legal systems and the diverse approaches to solving legal problems employed in those legal systems.
