The Princeton Review Announces Partnership With Department of Defense Education Activity to Provide Internet Education Resources to Military Families

NEW YORK, May 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Princeton Review is partnering with the Department of Defense Education Activity to provide internet resources tailored to the unique educational needs of students from military families who move frequently to perform their military duties. The joint project is called SOAR (Student On-line Achievement Resources) and counts the University of Northern Iowa and the Military Impacted Schools Association as partners as well.
"The Princeton Review is excited to use our instructional and formative assessment tools to help students from military families make successful academic transitions to new schools," said Michael Perik, President and CEO of The Princeton Review. "These tools have been used by some of our nation's largest and best school districts; they help students improve their skills and feel more confident about their classroom and test performance, while at the same time helping parents as they assist their children with specific skills."
Because military families are often required to relocate to different states and school districts, students often find that there are different state standards and requirements between what they learned at their previous school and what is expected of them at their new school. SOAR will assist with these transitions by providing military families with on-line resources that can help these students adjust to their new surroundings. Parents, teachers, youth centers, and before- and after-school programs can use SOAR to reinforce and review skills, practice what they've learned and learn new skills.
Targeted at students from military families in grades 3-12, SOAR builds and reinforces skills in math, reading and language arts. It also provides on-line assessment and instructional programs to help schools, students and parents identify academic strengths and weaknesses. Students go to http://www.soarathome.org/, where they can take a test based on their state's learning standards and be directed to a tutorial that will improve their skills where needed. Parents can monitor the progress of their child from anywhere in the world and are provided with resource materials that will assist their child in areas where he or she may need additional help.
