Posted on: Thursday, 29 May 2008, 12:00 CDT

DETROIT, May 29 /PRNewswire/ -- On Saturday, May 31st a carnival-like atmosphere will prevail at Wayne County Community College District's Downtown Campus where pre-k, elementary and middle school students will discover the wonderful world of books at the First Annual Chancellor's Reading Carnival for Children. WCCCD is partnering with the Detroit Public Schools to offer this special educational program at no cost.

WCCCD will honor Detroit Free Press Columnist Rochelle Riley for her efforts to promote literacy and her contribution to the community. The day's events will include workshops for parents, teachers and caregivers on encouraging children to read.

"Literacy and education are the cornerstones of success," said Chancellor Curtis L. Ivery. "At WCCCD, we believe that helping children and young adults cultivate a love of books and reading sets the foundation for an empowering education and a stronger future. This special event will effectively further our commitment to erasing illiteracy and encourage people to pursue educational goals."

Dr. Connie Calloway, superintendent of the Detroit Public Schools, said, "I am delighted to partner with WCCCD to bring this important program to the community. Our children are our future and we have the collective responsibility to do all we can to instill the love of reading and the desire for education in them."

The event will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and include fun and games, free books and book bags for children, light refreshments and other give-aways. The carnival-like atmosphere will be complete with activities like face painting and clowns. The program will also feature great stories, interactive programs and stimulating activities designed to make reading exciting and desirable. Workshops for parents and caregivers will provide helpful tips and tools to encourage reading among children. As the special guest of honor, Riley will present brief remarks at the event.

The District is committed to continue to develop new programs, host more community-based events, improve student facilities and services, upgrade technologies, make capital investments in massive building expansion projects, train staff members to enhance their skills and revamp internal processes to maximize efficiency.

Continuing Education credit is available for participants seeking points for certification. For more information about this event or other programs at WCCCD, call (313) 496-2510 or visit http://www.wcccd.edu/.
