New Locations for More at Four
By Gail Smith-Arrants, The Charlotte Observer, N.C.
Jun. 5--The Cabarrus County More at Four preschool program will have 14 sites for 2008-09, including two new locations. Two Dixon Academy sites have been added, said Anne Laukaitis, executive director for the Cabarrus Partnership for Children.
More at Four is a collaboration between the Cabarrus Partnership for Children and the Kannapolis City and Cabarrus County school systems.
The free, state-funded program is designed to give 4-year-olds a high-quality, educational experience to strengthen academic skills before kindergarten.
More than 1,200 children have been enrolled since the program started in 2002, Laukaitis said.
Classes meet for at least six hours a day for 180 days during the regular school year. In addition, child care is available before and after school; parents may be eligible for a subsidy to help with that cost. Some transportation is available for public school sites.
All participating centers are licensed with four or five stars by the N.C. Division of Child Development.
These are the local More at Four sites for 2008-09:
--Child care centers: Dixon Academy, Harrisburg; Dixon Academy, Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast; Elite Child Development Center, Concord; Kids Korner Child Development Center, Kannapolis; La Petite Academy, Concord; and Logan Child Care Center, Concord. (Piedmont Primary Academy of Concord is no longer part of the program.)
--Kannapolis City Schools: Woodrow Wilson Elementary; Fred L. Wilson Elementary; and McKnight Child Development Center.
