College of Charleston Board Raises Tuition

Jun. 11–Tuition for South Carolina students at the College of Charleston will jump 8 percent in the 2008-09 school year.
This year, tuition for full-time, in-state students is $7,778. But the school’s board of trustees voted Monday to increase it to $8,400 next year, according to a news release.
Out-of-state students face a 9 percent jump next year, with tuition for full-time students increasing from $18,732 to $20,418, the release said.
“The board of trustees understands the burden that a tuition increase places on our students and their parents, and has attempted to be as restrained as possible when considering the budget for this coming academic year,” board Chairman Bobby Marlowe said.
“The College of Charleston faces inflationary pressures during a year when state revenues require legislators to make difficult decisions involving state agencies and higher education,” he said.
According to the release, George Benson, the school’s president, said, “this action by the board will help the College of Charleston pay for increasing inflationary costs, retain top faculty, and continue delivering the quality education and services demanded by our students and the community.”
