Lawrence Summer School Offers Education, Fun
By Mark E. Vogler, The Eagle-Tribune, North Andover, Mass.
Jun. 13–LAWRENCE — Summer time means hot weather, trips to the beach, picnics and, for many students, a chance to get ahead in school.
Summer school starts July 1 for 2,000 city public school children in grades two through 12.
While 200 students who are at-risk of being held back a grade are required to attend, some 1,800 kids will be attending classes by choice this summer, said Janice Solomon, supervisor of the extended learning program.
The program, which will run Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to noon, will cost the school district an estimated $400,000, Solomon said.
It will operate in eight city schools, and classes will be as demanding as those run during the regular school year, says Superintendent Wilfredo Laboy.
Teachers with five years of experience or more will instruct the students, said Laboy.
The theme of this summer’s program for children in grades two to eight will be Voyager Time Warp Plus.
It is “a trip around the world without leaving Lawrence,” said Solomon. “They travel around the world and learn about different countries”
Students will also receive instruction in reading and writing, and there will be MCAS preparation classes for high school students, she said.
