DIXFIELD - The SAD 21 board learned of a plan to move the district's fitness center into the soon-to-be-transformed Dixfield Elementary School.
The fitness center serves students and staff at the former Richardson Hollow building. When the center is moved, likely by autumn, it will be available to the public as well, said Superintendent Tom Ward.
Plans call for setting up fitness equipment acquired through a federal grant with neighboring SAD 43 in the elementary school gym. A minimal fee structure would allow retirees to use the facility for free.
Details will be discussed at the school board's next meeting on July 14.
The elementary school is being renovated for multiple uses including the central administrative office and additional high school classrooms.
Also at Monday's meeting, Ward said the board approved upping the student fee per sport from $15 to $20, beginning in the autumn.
Students who qualify for free or reduced lunch do not have to pay the fee. Ward said students may also apply for exclusion from paying the fee if economic hardship is demonstrated.
In other matters, the board approved submission of an administrative merger plan with SADs 39 and 43 to the state's Department of Education. The SAD 43 board has already approved submission of the plan. SAD 39 has yet to act.
A closed session was held following the public portion of the board meeting to discuss negotiations with educational technicians and secretaries. Ward said the next step must be taken by the bargaining units.
