TWO North-East schools beat strong competition to finish first and second in a national maths competition.

St Joseph?s RC Primary School, Billingham, won the primary age category of Grand Final of the Jaguar Cars Maths in Motion Challenge with Layfield Primary School, Ya rm, near Stockton, in second place.

The schools not only beat nine other primary schools from across the UK, but several secondary school teams too.

Nearly 1,000 schools took part in the competition, involving an estimated 100,000 pupils.

Jane Casey, headteacher at St Joseph?s school said: “We are very proud, particularly considering the children only started the Maths in Motion Challenge last October, and they powered their way through to the finals.

“This reflects the increasing maths ability of our children.

“They thoroughly enjoyed both the challenge of the experience and also the visit to the Jaguar factory. ” Hazel Ducker, headteacher at Layfield school, said: “We are very proud of our children who did their very best and represented our school brilliantly. We look forward to next year?s challenge with our best intent on winning.” Councillor Alex Cunningham, Stockton Borough Council?s cabinet member for children and young people, said: “This is a phenomenal achievement by the pupils. Both schools have done incredibly well to be up against secondary students and win. “
