Youngsters Draw Inspiration From Tees

YOUNGSTERS have the results of a year-long project to develop their artistic skills.
The work of the 150 primary and secondary pupils from across the Te es Valley went on show in an exhibition on Wednesday, as the Drawing To gether scheme came to a close.
In the project, run by Creative Partnerships, a Government initiative to encourage children?s creativity, each school focused on a different part of the River Te es.
The students - from English Martyrs School and Sixth Form College, in Hartlepool, To llesby School and Easterside Primary School, in Middlesbrough, Kilton Thorpe School, in Brotton, and Darlington?s Mount Pleasant and Holy Family primary schools - took their subjects from natural and manmade aspects along the riverbanks.
They made study trips to locations, including Middlesbrough?s Riverside Stadium, Darlington Railway Museum and Te esmouth Estuary, where they drew inspiration from the beach, the wildlife and the industrial landscapes.
The schools worked with professional artists Jake Attree and Jack and Jo Chesterman, to improve their skills and develop their ideas.
Maureen Hanley, creative advisor for Creative Partnerships, said: "This project aimed to stimulate young people?s curiosity in drawing, which in many schools is not an integral part of day-to- day learning.
"Drawing offers you the opportunity to slow down and engage with your surroundings and environment in a different way. It helps your concentration and can support learning in subjects such as science, geography and history.
"As this exhibition shows, our young people have some very considerable talent. They can be very proud of what they have achieved and I hope that they will build on that success in the years ahead. " The exhibition is on display at the Museum of Hartlepool, at Hartlepool?s Maritime Experience until Sunday, August 24. Entry is free.
