Minnesota School Expanding to Meet Growing Demand for Online Education

Posted on: Wednesday, 16 July 2008, 12:01 CDT

HOUSTON, Minn., July 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The Minnesota Center of Online Learning (MCoOL), a program of the Houston Public School District, is expanding to serve more students statewide and is currently accepting students for the 2008-09 school year, which begins September 2. The expansion is being spurred by the growing demand for the program which achieved the highest writing scores among Minnesota online schools, and is recognized for its reputation as the school of choice for Advanced Placement courses, academic rigor, highly experienced teachers, and commitment to individualized attention to help each student succeed.

"We are expanding our program to meet growing enrollment demands, resulting from Minnesota students' increased interest in online education as well our continued track record of success in providing a high-quality, flexible education option for students in grades 7-12," said MCoOL Principal Dean Gunnarson.

MCoOL is a public, online school open to Minnesota students in grades 7-12. The school takes a high-tech, high-touch approach to education that begins with a high-quality, state-aligned curriculum, supported by experienced teachers licensed in Minnesota. Because all classes are conducted online, MCoOL offers free use of a loaner computer to all full-time students who request them for the duration of their active enrollment, along with any required textbooks.

"We maintain a strong commitment to personal attention and academic success of our students," said Gunnarson. "While we utilize cutting-edge technology to deliver education, we remain true to our small community roots by investing the time to get to know each student and tailor educational plans to meet individual needs and interests."

MCoOL counselors work with each student to design an individually-tailored academic program designed to fit their learning needs, interests and post-high school goals. With over 100 courses available, students and counselors work together to create an optimal plan for each student, whether college- or career-bound. The award-winning curriculum includes core courses found in a traditional school setting, including Math, Social Studies, Science and English, as well as a wide range of electives including over 15 World Language courses, over 20 Advanced Placement courses, and high-tech classes such as digital video production, game design, and Flash animation.

MCoOL's individual attention extends to the classroom, where the school's dedicated teachers interact with students in a virtual "classroom" and are available for students by email and phone.

"MCoOL has created a complete online learning environment that brings together parents, teachers, academic counselors and student peers as partners to help each student succeed," said Gunnarson.

Minnesota residents can enroll either full- or part-time at MCoOL for the upcoming 2008-09 school year, which begins September 2. The enrollment deadline for first quarter is August 20.

MCoOL will host a series of Open Houses throughout the state where students and parents can meet with teachers and current MCoOL families to learn more about this innovative education option.
