Scholarship Honors Former NW Instructor -- Chad Williams Served College From 1964 to 1990

The Northwest Mississippi Community College Foundation recently announced the Claude Chadwick "Chad" Williams Sr. Endowed Scholarship.

The scholarship was established by his daughter, MaryLee Williams Sturgeon, and other family members in recognition of his contribution to education and in appreciation for his devotion to his family.

Born in 1925, Williams graduated from Marietta High School in Prentiss County in 1943. He married Reba Caldwell of Marietta in 1944. He served in the Navy during World War II from 1944 to 1946.

After his service in the Navy, he was a farmer for eight years and continued to work in agriculture and trucking while attending college at what was then Northeast Mississippi Junior College in Booneville. He received a bachelor of science in mathematics from Delta State University and a master of science in biology from the University of Mississippi. He completed additional studies at Mississippi State University and the University of Mississippi.

While attending college, he worked in the summer as field reporter for the Prentiss County Agricultural Stabilization Conservation and again after he began teaching school at the Itawamba County Agricultural Stabilization Conservation.

Williams taught high school mathematics at New Site High School, Marietta High School, Tremont High School, and Miami Edison High School; and he also served as an assistant high school principal for five years.

In 1964, he began his career at Northwest, teaching general biology, botany, zoology, horticulture, algebra, college math and photojournalism. He served for two years as coordinator of transportation and director of student aid. He retired in 1986 and continued to teach on a part-time basis until 1990.

A longtime member of the Senatobia Lions Club, Williams served as scoutmaster of Troop No. 77 of the Boy Scouts of America.

He and his wife, Reba, have five children, four of whom are graduates of Northwest; 10 grandchildren, two of whom have graduated from Northwest, and two great-grandchildren.

The scholarship will be awarded to a student majoring in science, mathematics or agricultural technology.
