Posted on: Wednesday, 23 July 2008, 00:00 CDT

Sarah Longfield, who graduated from Hempstead High School in May, was recently rewarded by the National Merit Scholarship Program for her academic achievements.

She joined five other area high school graduates who were named National Merit Scholars in late May.

The students, who were among approximately 8,300 students nationwide to be awarded by the program, will receive a range of monetary college scholarships.

Longfield plans to attend St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., to pursue a career in writing or publishing.
