Harveycutter graduates from Christopher Newport

Amelia Jane Harveycutter graduated from Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology on May 18. She began work on her Master in Education at CNU the following morning. Amelia is the daughter of Judy and Carey Harveycutter.

Roanoke College graduates 11 with ties to Salem

Eleven people with ties to the Salem area graduated from Roanoke College May 3. They are:

n Michael M. Bursey earned a Bachelor of Science. He is the son of William and Elizabeth Bursey.

n Samantha L. Carder earned a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Political Science. She is the daughter of William and Victoria Carder.

n Jacob M. Furry earned a Bachelor of Business Adminstration. He is the son of Mark and Carol Furry.

n Casey N. Gearheart earned a Bachelor of Science with a major in Mathematics. She is the daughter of Timothy W. Gearheart.

n Daryl H. Hyatt earned a Bachelor of Arts with a major in International Relations and a second major in Political Science. She is the daughter of Charles and Freda Hylton.

n Chad W. Lawerance earned a Bachelor of Science with a major in Chemistry. He is the son of Richard and Alice Lawerance.

n Nathan D. May earned a Bachelor of Science with a major in Computer Information Systems. He is the son of Ricky and Terriann May.

n Elizabeth A. Moeller earned a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Psychology. She is the daughter of Michael and Lisa Moeller.

n Majid W. Qaiser earned a Bachelor of Business Administration. He is the son of Wanda M. Qaiser-Hartman.

n Scott A. Stephenson earned a Bachelor of Arts with a major in History. He is the son of Max and Christina Stephenson.

n Dwayne R. Yates earned a Bachelor of Arts with a major in History. He is the son of Danny and Lucy Yates.

Hollins graduates 8 with ties to Salem

Hollins University graduated eight students on May 18 with ties to Salem and western Roanoke County. They are:

n Megan Houff Crew of Salem received the Master of Arts degree in Education.

n Julie Pruett Davis of Salem received the Master of Arts degree in Education

n Laurel Anne White Lytton of Catawba received the Bachelor of Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Studies.

n Jenny Waldron Pearson received the Bachelor of Arts degree in English. She graduated cum laude.

Pearson, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Waldron, is a graduate of Glenvar High School.

n Amelia J. Roberson of Salem received the Master of Fine Arts degree in Screenwriting.

n Sierra Leigh Setchel received the Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Studies. Setchel, the daughter of Gary Setchel, is a graduate of Salem High School.

n Angela Michelle Tabor of Salem received the Bachelor of Arts degree in History.

n Melody Anne Thomas received the Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. Thomas graduated with departmental honors. She was also named an honor student for the spring 2008 semester. Thomas, the daughter of Lester and Rhonda Thomas, is a graduate of Glenvar High School.

Pettrey graduates from UVa

Jessica Pettrey of Salem, graduated from University of Virginia with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Biology in May. Jessica is a 2004 Salem High School graduate and attended the Roanoke Valley Governor's School for Science and Math. She was accepted to attend Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy in August of the year.

Saunders graduates from Mary Baldwin

Christina Loyd Saunders received a Bachelors of Arts degree from Mary Baldwin College with a major in history and a minor in education. Christina is a 1989 graduate of Glenvar High School and is the daughter of Marvin and Evelyn Loyd of Salem.

Church hosts 'Celebrate America'

Tabernacle Baptist Church will hold "Celebrate America," on June 29 during the regular Sunday morning worship service which begins at 10:30 a.m.

The church is located at 1923 East Main Street in Salem.

Roanoke College presents children's play

Here's something for the kids this weekend: A one-act play under the stars.

Theatre Roanoke College presents "The Remus Tales," a one- actplay Friday, June 27 through Monday, June 30 at 8 p.m. in the amphitheatre at Olin Hall, Roanoke College.

It's intended for kids five and up and their families.

Bring a lawn chair or blanket and join us. No tickets needed.

Admission is free.

Six men with ties to the Salem area graduated from Hampden- Sydney College on May 11. They were:

n Benjamin Taylor Barnhill graduated with a B.A. in chemistry. He is a graduate of Salem High School and is the son of Judy Anderson Barnes of Virginia Beach and Kenneth Barnes of Washington, DC.

n John Randolph Booker graduated cum laude with a B.A. in chemistry. He is a graduate of Glenvar High School and is the son of Randy and Lauren Booker of Salem.

n James Lewis Gresham II graduated cum laude with a B.A. in religion. He is a graduate of Salem High School and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James A. Gresham of Salem.

n John Newman Rothgeb graduated with a B.A. in political science and fine arts-theatre. He is a graduate of Salem High School and is the son of Larry M. Rothgeb of Salem and Debbie Rothgeb of Roanoke and grandson of Jonny U. Rothgeb of Rileyville and Grace E. Rothgeb of Roanoke.

n Jonathan Allan Soderberg graduated with a B.A. in economics and commerce. He is a graduate of Salem High School and is the son of James and Laurel Soderburg of Salem.
