Jul. 25–Parents will have the option of transferring their students from Jackson Park and Shady Brook elementary schools in the fall to schools that met No Child Left Behind requirements.

Kannapolis City Schools officials say parents with children at these schools will be notified of their options by early August.

Schools that receive federal money for serving large numbers of low-income students (known as Title I schools) face penalties for not making Adequate Yearly Progress.

Schools not making AYP in the same subject for two consecutive years enter “school improvement” and must give parents the option of sending their children to different schools. Shady Brook Elementary will enter school improvement for the first time for missing AYP in math for two consecutive years.

Jackson Park Elementary has been on school improvement for two years, but met AYP goals in 2007-08. Still, Jackson Park will have to offer transfer options since schools must meet AYP for two consecutive years before exiting school improvement.

“We never had very many parents take the option, because they typically are not dissatisfied with the schools where their children are,” said system spokesperson Ellen Boyd. “Almost none of choose to take that option.”

Kannapolis Intermediate School will be required to offer additional tutoring services to students for not making AYP in math for three consecutive years.

Eleven schools from Rowan-Salisbury Schools will be required to offer transfer options or supplemental services in 2008-09.

Area schools included in that list, include China Grove, Landis and Millbridge elementary schools. Parents with students attending these schools will be mailed letters providing additional information.
