Kindergartners Get Preview of First-Day of School
By Carole Brand, The Enterprise Ledger, Ala.
Aug. 2--Coffee County Schools kindergartners received an advanced opportunity to meet teachers, school staff and principals in the annual Jumpstart program designed for students starting school.
At New Brockton Elementary School, principal Dale Kelley said 36 kindergartners were registered and attended the two-day program.
"Right now, we've got three kindergarten teachers, who are introducing the students to the classroom," Kelley said. "The Jumpstart program was actually designed to give the new students a chance to meet their teachers and for me to meet with the parents."
During the program, students were exposed to a mini-kindergarten schedule and allowed to tour the building and introduced to teachers and school staff before school officially begins Wednesday, Aug.6.
Coffee County Schools Family Liaison Carol Mooney said the Jumpstart program was a way to expose the students to a new school environment and for parents to be able to have information before school starts.
"The three-hour Jumpstart for all of the county's elementary school kindergartners is also an opportunity for parents to meet their child's teacher and have a parent/teacher meeting about the procedures for school," Mooney said. "The teacher explains her discipline plan, class schedule, rules and the drop off/pick up for students.
"It's also an opportunity to collect the first lunch and snack money for the first week, so the new kindergartners won't have to keep up with that during the first week."
