By Cherish Wilson, The Shelby Star, N.C.
Aug. 2--Hope Christian Academy of Kings Mountain plans to offer a Montessori Middle School program beginning this coming school year. The program will open to students in the sixth through eighth grades.
Sandra Ramkissoon, who holds the American Montessori Society certification from the Florida Institute of Montessori Studies, will supervise the middle school. Ramkissoon, who has 19 years teaching experience, has also served as a Montessori Teacher Educator for the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System.
She said that while Hope Christian will adopt the Montessori methods, they will continue to use the Bob Jones and A Beka curriculum.
"Our Christian curriculum provides for cognitive development, concept development, and skill acquisitions in prepared classrooms with a focus on learning by doing. Our methods enable students to develop respect for individual differences as they engage in purposeful, collaborative learning," Ramkissoon said.
Hope Christian Montessori Middle School is dedicated to social service having made outreach activity definitive features of the school's program/curriculum. The program will include daylong internships at fire stations, police departments and hospitals.
Hope is the only school in Cleveland and Gaston counties to offer this type of middle school program. To learn more, call Hope Christian at 704-734-0051 or Ramkissoon at 704-689-9200.
