Grant Will Fund Del City’s New After-School Programs

Aug. 5–DEL CITY — Working parents with students in Del City Elementary School may soon have the chance to save money on day care expenses.
This week, Midwest City-Del City officials announced the school has received a $1.2 million federal grant for after-school programs. The funds will be disbursed in $244,000 allotments over the next five years.
Ruth Kizer, the school’s principal, said the funds will go toward offering after-school services from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. daily starting Sept. 8. Although the program will provide kids with a snack and fun things to do, Kizer said boosting student achievement will be the program’s main focus.
During the two-hour period, all students will be given a snack and will spend 15 to 30 minutes doing physical activities. They also will work on math and reading enrichment activities.
The school also will partner with other groups like the Oklahoma Fish and Wildlife Department and Rose State College to teach students things like archery, rock painting and cooking.
“They’re going to be learning and they won’t even know it because they’ll be having so much fun,” Kizer said.
While the program is free and open to all Del City Elementary students, there are some restrictions. School officials said the funding is not enough to provide the program to all students, so it will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
Students who enroll also must agree to participate in the program’s entirety.
Although not required, parents should be willing to pick their kids up from school. School transportation will be provided for students with no other way home.
Kizer said information about the program will be sent home next week. A parents’ meeting, which hasn’t been scheduled yet, will be held later this month.
