Southern California students who want to earn their high school diploma have a new, exciting option. Launched as a partnership between online learning leader Advanced Academics, Inc. and Hacienda La Puente Unified School District (HLPUSD), Southern California Virtual High School will offer a comprehensive online program for area students tuition free.
"The Southern California Virtual High School program is a self-paced option for students who are struggling in a traditional high school environment or those looking to return to school to obtain their diploma," said Dr. Barbara Nakaoka, HLPUSD superintendent. "Students who enroll in the program will benefit from individualized attention, around-the-clock support, and a flexible class schedule."
According to a U.S. Department of Education study, 6,000 students drop out of school each day. Southern California Virtual High School constitutes a high-quality option for high school dropouts or students at risk of dropping out, such as those behind on credits or needing a flexible schedule. The full-time program offers online classes that comply with all California graduation requirements.
Students earn their high school diploma in a personalized program featuring one-on-one access to state-certified teachers, 24/7 student support, and a full high school curriculum including electives and college preparatory courses. Students without access to a computer are eligible to receive a free laptop with wireless capabilities, ensuring that they can access their schoolwork in a safe, secure environment. Upon completion of graduation requirements, students will receive a diploma from the Hacienda La Puente Unified School District and are able to participate in graduation.
"We are thrilled to be partnering with the Hacienda La Puente Unified School District to offer this innovative program," said Jeff Elliott, president of Advanced Academics, Inc. "Southern California Virtual High School is an engaging, high-quality, and flexible program that will help more students graduate and succeed."
Southern California Virtual High School is open to full-time students in grades 9-12 who are 18 years old and younger. To qualify, students must be currently enrolled in either HLPUSD or any of the following counties: Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, Kern, Riverside, and Ventura. The program is also available to 19 and 20 year-olds living in Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, Kern, Riverside, or Ventura counties who are not currently enrolled in school.
Interested students may begin applying starting August 18. Information sessions intended to help prospective students and parents learn about more about the online program are planned.
