Contest Seeks Best Anti-Drug Posters
By Amelia A. Hart
A foundation funded by the sale of Keep Kids Drug Free specialty license plates has awarded its first grant to the Nassau County School District.
The $5,000 donation from the Gateway Community Services Keep Kids Drug Free Foundation will fund a contest for third-, fourth- and fifth-graders in each Nassau County public school to create posters with an anti-drug message, just in time for Red Ribbon Week, Oct. 18- 26.
Awards will be made for the top three posters at each school. A district winning poster will be chosen from among the winners at each school.
One thousand copies of the district winning poster will be printed and displayed throughout Nassau County, with 20 framed copies exhibited in key locations, including each Nassau school.
The grant will provide $50 to each school to purchase materials for Red Ribbon Week, which promotes drug use prevention and education.
It also will fund first-, second- and third-place awards of $200, $150 and $100, respectively, to the three schools with greatest percentage of student participation. – Amelia A. Hart
