The Mt. Diablo School District board recently appointed veteran educator Rose Lock as assistant superintendent of elementary education. Lock, who came to Mt. Diablo in 1990, has been principal of Walnut Acres Elementary since 1999.

She replaces Roger Bylund, who left the district earlier this summer to become superintendent of the Paradise Unified School District.

Lock spent 12 years teaching math to middle and high school students in Sacramento, San Mateo and San Leandro. Then she became vice principal of Sequoia Middle School and four years later, principal at Valhalla Elementary.

In 1998 she became principal of Walnut Acres. There, she led the school to twice being recognized as a California Distinguished School and, in 2005, as a federal No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School.

She has written two math books, established student orientation and recognition programs and led the development of school technology plans. Lock oversaw the installation of computers and networks at Valhalla and Walnut Acres.
