Four Local Teachers Among Finalists for Top State Honor

Three elementary school teachers and one career and technical education teacher are state finalists for the title of 2009 Maine Teacher of the Year.

Michelle Gagne, a first-grade teacher at Sherwood Heights Elementary School in Auburn; David Giroux, a grade 9-12 automotive technology instructor at Maine Vocational Region 10 School in Brunswick; Gloria L. Noyes, a fifth-grade teacher at Congin Elementary School in Westbrook; and Diana Tomasello Waterman, a kindergarten through Grade 6 music and chorus teacher at Alfred and Shapleigh Memorial elementary schools all have been nominated for the honor.

They were selected from an original nominee list of nine. They had to present a professional portfolio detailing their work as well as write oral presentations.

Finalists will now meet with a panel educators for a final interview.

The winner will be announced by state Education Commissioner Susan Gendron at a surprise all-school assembly later this month.
