The Manchester Academic Charter School has been honored with a Blue Ribbon award for school excellence by the U.S. Department of Education, according to The Heinz Endowments.

The award is part of the No Child Left Behind-Blue Ribbon Schools Program which recognizes public and private schools that are academically superior in their state or which demonstrate significant gains in student achievement, a news release from The Heinz Endowments said.

The North Side charter school, which opened in the fall of 1998, is the only school in the city to receive the commendation this year and the first charter school in the region to receive the honor.

The Heinz Endowments awarded Manchester Academic a $45,000 grant this year to expand its use of technology.
