Academic

The following Southampton High School graduates were awarded Paul D. Camp Community College Camp-to-Camp $4,000 Scholarships :

Kelsey Birckhead of Ivor is majoring in education and plans to transfer to Longwood University. She also received the $3,000 Commonwealth Legacy Scholarship.

Krystle Cranor of Courtland is majoring in general studies and hopes to major in psychology at Old Dominion University after graduating from PDCCC. She also received the $500 Presidential Scholarship.

Jared Dotts of Capron is majoring in computer science and plans to transfer after earning an associate’s degree at PDCCC.

Kelly Gray of Zuni is majoring in general studies and plans to transfer to Longwood University.

Shannan Nash of Sedley is planning to major in journalism after graduating from PDCCC.

Bridget Sykes of Franklin plans to enter the registered nursing program next year.

Matthew VanDerWege of Courtland is majoring in general studies.

Hilary Warford of Courtland is majoring in nursing. She plans to transfer to ODU.

Windsor High School graduate Courtney Wuchter of Carrsville also earned the PDCCC Camp-to-Camp $4,000 Scholarship. The general studies major hopes to become a licensed optician.

In order to qualify for the scholarship funded by the Ruth Camp Campbell Foundation, students must reside in Franklin, Southampton County or Isle of Wight County; have a GPA of 2.5 or higher; enroll in at least 12 semester credits in a certificate or degree program at PDCCC for fall and spring semesters .

The Suffolk Education Foundation awarded 12 scholarships valued at $12,000 to help local high school graduates continue their education.

Earning the seventh annual Jean and Harry L. Cross Jr. Endowment Scholarship were Juan Lascano of Nansemond River High School, Jennifer Tacke of Lakeland High School and Kourtney Nichols of King’s Fork High School. Lascano plans to study biology at Norfolk State University to prepare for a career in physical therapy. Tacke plans to study biology at Campbell University and become a physician’s assistant. Nichols plans to study special education and early childhood education at Longwood University and wants to teach autistic children .

Honored with the ninth annual Helen and Ned Ferguson Endowment Scholarship were Christopher McLean of Nansemond River High School, Katherine Saunders of Lakeland High School and Katrina McNair of King’s Fork High School. McLean will attend Morehouse College to pursue a career in computer engineering. Saunders plans to study education at Christopher Newport University and hopes to return to Suffolk to teach high school history. McNair plans to study criminal justice at Virginia Commonwealth University.

LaTonia Gatling of King’s Fork High School received the $1,000 Gertrude B. Pruden Family Arts Scholarship. She will attend Fayetteville State University and major in criminal justice with a minor in art.

William Fly of King’s Fork High School and Andrew Topping of Nansemond River High School received the G. Blair Harry Memorial Scholarship awards. Fly will attend Greensboro College to pursue a health and physical education degree and play football . Topping is headed to the College of William and Mary to pursue a degree in kinesiology for a career in sports medicine or athletic training. He will also play football .

Additional scholarship awards include: Ashby Stancill from Lakeland High School, who received the Suffolk Education Foundation “Creekside Design Team” Excellence Scholarship. She will attend the University of Virginia and plans to pursue a degree in mathematics and education .

Vernell Woods from Nansemond River High School received the Suffolk Education Foundation Electronic Systems Excellence Scholarship will attend Georgia Tech to pursue a degree in computer engineering .

Cory Bridger from King’s Fork High School received the Suffolk Education Foundation General Excellence Scholarship and will attend James Madison University to pursue a career in health sciences .

D. Ames Herbert of Franklin received the Andy Swiger Land-Grant Award for his contributions to Virginia Tech’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences .

Established to reward creative achievement and commitment to the college, the award recognizes a faculty and a staff member whose accomplishments in teaching, research or Extension work greatly benefits the agriculture industry and improves the quality of life for Virginians.

Herbert, a professor of entomology and Virginia Cooperative Extension entomologist, located at the Tidewater Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Suffolk , was recognized for his outstanding research and Extension insect pest management program. His expertise is highly valued by colleagues, commodity groups and industry personnel . Herbert has authored numerous publications, including more than 100 Virginia Cooperative Extension publications.

Golf tournament winners

The fifth annual Paul D. Camp Community College Golf Tournament was held Aug. 11 at Cypress Cove Country Club in Franklin to benefit student scholarships and faculty needs. The following golfers won their flights :

First flight (see photo on page 24), RCS Smithfield Team, John Greenlee, Chris Kennedy, Matthew Opauski and Tony Stephenson; Second flight, Wal-Mart Team, Kevin Hudgins, Rich Ridge, Chris West and John Gray; Third Flight, Comfort Keepers Team, Ed Patnesky, Joe Mottiqua Jr. and Joe Mottiqua III.

Bob Stanley and Moss Beecroft won for shots closest to hole ; Chris West had the longest drive ; and Miles Car for closest to line hole . Jeff McClellan won the pre-tournament putting contest.

Professional

Attorney John T. “Jack” Randall has joined the Suffolk branch of law firm Stallings & Bischoff, P.C.

Randall will specialize in criminal law, DUIs , traffic offenses, juvenile and children’s law, personal injury and domestic relations.

Randall earned his bachelor’s degree at Christopher Newport University in Government Administration and completed his Juris Doctorate at Regent University School of Law. Randall is a member of the Virginia State Bar, Southampton County/City of Franklin Bar Association, the Fraternal Order of Police and the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association.

Milton R. Liverman, Ed.D., superintendent of Suffolk Public Schools, has been elected to serve a three-year term on the Governing Board of the American Association of School Administrators. AASA is the professional organization for school superintendents and other school system leaders nationwide. As a member of the AASA Governing Board, Liverman will help to set the policy agenda for the association.

“I am honored by this opportunity to serve the leading association for K-12 educators,” Liverman said. “As a member of the AASA Governing Board, I look forward to contributing to AASA’s efforts to advance high-quality education for all children.”

Ashley O. Greene and Teresa Wilson have joined the office staff at The American Red Cross, Suffolk Chapter .

Greene, the development director, is a Suffolk native and is raising her four children here with Andy, her husband of 12 years . Greene has been operating her own marketing company, Marketing Mojo, as well as volunteering in the community.

“I wanted to take my love of non-profit work to another level,” Greene said, “and I am extremely motivated to work for this Red Cross chapter to enhance its community outreach. “

Wilson, who will serve as administrative assistant, is also a Suffolk native.

“I have lived in Suffolk my whole life and am raising my son here now. I have seen how important the Red Cross is to the community, and I wanted to be a part of that great work.” Wilson brings over 14 years of administrative experience to the chapter.

Forensic Unit Supervisor Joan Jones was selected by the Virginia Forensic Science Academy Alumni Association as the 2008 FVSAAA Member of the Year.

Jones was selected for continually excelling in the field of forensic science and crime scene investigation. Her efforts recently brought the department nationwide recognition when one of her crime scenes was featured in a book, “Guilty by a Hair.”
