‘What About the Other Kids?’

September 23, 2008

It is the other pupils in the class we should be thinking about – those who behave and want an education.

There is far too much time and money thrown at children whose poor behaviour is given a label that makes it acceptable. I think that the educational psychologists should get themselves into the classrooms and see how pupils like this boy can cause misery for many children.

When I grew up there was no ADHD, naughtiness was just that and not tolerated.

Let’s go back to intolerance of this sort of behaviour and focus on those who will contribute to society. I have every sympathy for those parents who have children with genuine learning difficulties who are having to share resources with cases like the one reported on.

LIZ JONES, Lincoln.

Children should know from their parents that when they leave the house in the morning they will go to lessons, listen, work hard and come home, then they can go out to play.

Teachers are not behavioural managers – they should not not spend 50 minutes of lessons telling disruptive students off, detracting from the learning of the majority of the class.

If a child has been raised properly, knows the value of a good education and is not frightened of hard work it will fly through school making lots of friends and becoming a successful adult.

I believe the coverage was biased and pointed the finger of blame at a very good school, with fantastic teachers and where 99.9 per cent of the students want to get an education.

STUART HANSON, Lincoln.

I was at senior school from 1954 to 1958 and I reckon all of us had ADHD, but in those days we were just dealt with accordingly.

So bad was I that I eventually obtained two degrees and a teaching certificate, and became a member of both the legal and teaching professions.

My wife says I still have what is now called ADHD because I am so awkward and cantankerous, especially when I read articles and letters associated with the behaviour of kids.
