MAKING THE NEWS: Billingham Forum will shut for 18 months for its pounds 15m refurbishment instead of a previously planned phased closure to allow facilities to stay open. Stockton Council says the move will speed up the revamp of the 1960s-built sports and leisure complex and reduce costs.
Improvements include a new swimming pool, upgraded ice rink, an extension to the gym with 30 additional health and fitness stations, a new adventure play area for young children, new dance studio and new bar and bistro.
The outside of the building will be completely rebuilt and transformed with a glazed entrance and glass atrium and a new roof. It is anticipated that the entire Forum will close in July 2009 with the intention of reopening for January 2011.
Plans have also been announced for a pounds 45m comprehensive redevelopment and revitalisation of the decaying town centre.
