WASHINGTON TWP., Montgomery County -- The key to finding the right college and getting into one is early preparation, according to Samuel Wagner, the director of college counseling and interim upper principal at Miami Valley School.
"Getting into college is not an impossible dream," said Wagner, who has been counseling students for 16 years.Wagner urges high school seniors preparing to get into college to always remember that what they do in college is vastly more important than where which college they choose to attend."
Students are encouraged to assert themselves in discovering options, use available resources and be realistic and positive.
Wagner, who was recently elected to serve as the secretary of the Ohio Association of College Admissions Counseling, adds that although there are many wonderful colleges out there, high school students should talk to counselors to assist them in selecting the best fit for their needs.
The OACAC is a statewide organization consisting of high school guidance counselors, college admissions representatives, financial aid officers and other groups interacting with students regarding postsecondary education.
"The transition from high school to college is a significant one, but Miami Valley School offers a structured college-counseling program to provide information, advice, support and various resources" said Wagner, who has counseled students into fine art schools including the Manhattan College of Music, military schools (West Point), ivy league and local colleges. A graduate of Westtown School, a Quaker independent school outside of Philadelphia, Wagner said he felt pulled toward teaching and counseling at a young age.
"I attended Haverford College, receiving my bachelor of arts in English with concentrations in sociology, creative writing and photography."
He also holds a masters degree in education, from the University of New Orleans, specializing in curriculum and instruction and high school administration.
