EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE - Fifty teachers explored the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center as part of a larger educational program funded through the California Department of Education.
The fourth- through sixth-grade teachers were selected from the Palmdale, Eastside Union, Keppel Union and Wilsona Elementary school districts with the goal of improving pupils' scores in mathematics and science.
"Grades four through eight are the focus of this grant program because students traditionally lose interest in mathematics and science at these grade levels," said David Murphy of California State University, Bakersfield's Antelope Valley campus and principal investigator for the Antelope Valley Math and Science Partnership grant.
Half the teachers spent Wednesday and half spent Thursday touring Dryden's facilities and aircraft. The afternoons were spent in an aviation workshop with a math and science focus.
The day at Dryden was part of a two-week professional development workshop held at the Lancaster University Center. The NASA-funded Arizona State University Mars Exploration program will support the second week of the workshop.
The teachers will meet monthly during the fall to discuss teaching methods. Next spring each teacher will become a classroom mentor for five other teachers.
During summer 2006, the original teachers and those mentored will attend a weeklong, follow-up workshop.
Partners in this grant work are NASA, the California Department of Education, Antelope Valley College, California State University, Bakersfield-Antelope Valley and Texas Instruments.
