PSU College of Medicine Gets $18.7 Million Grant

Posted on: Friday, 8 July 2005, 21:00 CDT

Jul. 8--The Penn State College of Medicine announced Thursday that it has received a five-year, $18.7 million grant to support ongoing research at the Penn State General Clinical Research Center in Hershey.

The research center is one of 78 research facilities sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. Established in 1995, it provides a centralized place for physicians and researchers to meet with patients who take part in clinical investigations.

The grant comes from the NIH National Center for Research Resources.

"This award is the result of a strategic and monumental effort by the GCRC staffs at the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and University Park campuses to ensure continued progress in advancing health care, the future of this important facility and the critical clinical research taking place there," said Jay Moskowitz, associate vice president for health sciences research at Penn State and chief scientific officer at Penn State Hershey Medical Center.

The grant will enable the center to upgrade its infrastructure, such as hospital beds and laboratories, and add personnel, such as nurses and physicians assistants.

Some of the topics currently being researched by the center team include destructive sleep apnea, whether or not children with attention-deficit disorder are more prone to sleep-related disorders, and the causes of acne.

Dr. Lawrence Sinoway, GCRC program director and professor of medicine at Penn State College of Medicine, Penn State Hershey Medical Center, cited the center's high standards of excellence as the primary reason that it was selected for the prestigious grant. Preparations are already underway to secure more money when the facilities grant is up for review in five years."

"Every time we are evaluated for a grant, we receive a list of things we are doing well and things that we could improve upon," he said. "We did pretty well, which can make it hard to improve, but we've already started working on what needs to be done."
