Germantown A college dean, a community volunteer with a master's degree in education, a former school board member, a former school board candidate and a former teacher have applied to fill a vacancy on the Board of Education here.
The deadline was Wednesday for school district residents to apply to replace Jayne Borst, who resigned June 27 after returning to her job as secretary to the superintendent. The person chosen by the School Board, which has not set a timeline on naming a replacement, will serve until Borst's seat comes up for election in April.
The school board typically interviews applicants during an open session of a regular board meeting.
The five applicants, according to letters they submitted to the district, are:
-- Thomas Becker of Wooded Ridge Trail in Colgate is the only applicant who doesn't live in Germantown. A former elementary school teacher at St. Eugene in Fox Point, Becker has owned Becker Technology of Hubertus, a business consulting firm, since 1993.
Becker said he has also worked as a training consultant and computer programmer and formerly taught computer classes in Cardinal Stritch University's Continuing Education Program. He and his wife have one child at Amy Belle Elementary School and two preschool children.
-- James Lynch of Aspen Court served on the school board since 1993 until deciding not to seek re-election in April. Lynch, a retired finance director at Milwaukee Transport Services, served as the board's president for three years.
Lynch said he is treasurer of the Kiwanis Club of Germantown and of Brown Deer United Methodist Church. He said he has volunteered at Rockfield School since 1998.
-- Charles Robinson of Western Ave. said that he was employed by a Fortune 500 company for 27 years and had experience with managing a multimillion-dollar budget. He said he is president of the Wauwatosa Red Raider Band Boosters and past president of Faith Lutheran Church in Germantown.
Robinson ran unsuccessfully for the Village Board in 2002 and the School Board in 2004.
-- Bob Simmons of Donges Bay Road has been associate dean for faculty services at Cardinal Stritch University's business school since September. He previously was a senior project leader for five years at Metavante (M&I Data Services), held other jobs in business and was an infantry captain in the U.S. Army. He said he is also responsible for faculty selection and mentoring as chair of the Information Systems and Technology Area at the Wisconsin campus of the University of Phoenix.
Simmons said he will have two children attending County Line School in the fall.
-- Barbara Szyper of Ashbury Lane, whose two children have attended Germantown schools, volunteers for the Odyssey of the Mind teams at County Line School and Destination Imagination at the high school. She said she also served six years on the board of directors of the Germantown Little League.
Szyper said she has a master's degree in education and is completing a master's degree in clinical psychology. She said she has many years of experience in both fields working with children, adolescents and their families.
