Jul. 18--ST. MARTIN - Barry Amacker was on vacation when he received the news that he would take over for Loretta Goff, former assistant superintendent of St. Martin schools in the Jackson County School District.
Amacker was principal at St. Martin High for five years.
Amacker was born in Mobile but graduated from Moss Point High after his family moved to the area with his preacher father. He received bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of South Alabama and a doctorate from Nova Southeastern University in Florida.
He worked as an educator for 26 years in Mobile County, where he was a principal, assistant principal and band director. His family lives in Ocean Springs.
He talked with the Sun Herald about his new job:
QUESTION: Why did you want to become assistant superintendent?
ANSWER: Having been the high school principal the past five years, I felt it was an opportunity to continue the things we'd been doing at the high school in a broader way throughout the attendance area.
Q: What is your main goal for St. Martin schools?
A: The main focus is always student achievement. We've provided individual enrichment at the high school for students that needed help. Also, one of my goals is to develop a collaborative effort throughout the attendance area. We had a leadership program, getting people involved with decision making, and also we have a great deal of construction going on. One of the things is to do what I can to see those through until completion.
Q: What changes do you want to make?
A: My predecessor did an outstanding job. For starters, we are going to press on with the things she started, and as we go along we will implement things as they are needed.
Q: Are there any pressing needs at St. Martin?
A: I think we are making great strides toward our building needs, but we've got work to do. It's a growing community. I don't have data to support it, but my hunch is we will experience growth in the next few years at St. Martin.
Q: What would like to see in the new principal at St. Martin High?
A: We would like someone to continue with the same philosophy that we started.
