Columbus State University Expects Record 7,500 for Fall

Posted on: Thursday, 21 July 2005, 03:01 CDT

Jul. 20--Records are made to be broken and Columbus State University does it every year.

Officials are expecting a fall enrollment of about 7,500, a record for the university and about a 4 percent increase from fall 2004. Since fall 2000, the university has grown from nearly 5,200 students to 7,500 -- a 44 percent increase.

"It's fabulous," said Kathy Carlisle, executive director of enrollment marketing.

She said applications are up 20 percent from last year, but after a spring graduating class of about 600, the university will have to enroll about 900 new students this fall.

"We have the potential for it to be greater," Carlisle said.

She said one problem administrators are trying to work on is creating more classes or increasing the size of classes. Administrators are trying to get the word out to students to register early, which lasts through July 28. The last day for applications for this fall is Friday.

CSU President Frank Brown said state funding has allowed the university to hire additional faculty this summer to help with the shortage of available classes.

"We are in a situation where we're not offering sections of classes simply because we don't have the faculty to do it," he said. "There will be some relief in sight."

He said the university has grown quicker than the state's funds to manage it. Parking is another issue on campus, but a parking garage is scheduled to go next to the Lumpkin Center sometime next year.

Administrators said they are tackling the problems as much as they can.

"We weren't ready to grow so fast," Carlisle said. "It hasn't stopped, but we don't want it to stop."

Although growth does present some problems, Brown said the increase in enrollments statewide show a positive trend -- high school graduation rates. He said CSU is glad to welcome as many students from different areas of the state, country and world that want to come.
