Lake-Lehman Might Quit Health Insurer Co-Op

Jul. 22--LEHMAN TWP. -- The Lake-Lehman School Board president says the district might quit an area school health consortium because of a possible $300,000 increase in health-care costs.
At Thursday's meeting, Jim Mahon said the Northeastern Pennsylvania School Districts Health Trust has proposed a 12 percent increase.
The idea behind the health trust is that school districts would purchase health coverage together in an effort to keep costs down.
"Nothing is off the table. We're going to look everywhere and anywhere," Mahon said.
The district pays the health trust nearly $2.9 million a year, according to Mahon.
Mahon said he hopes to have information on a new provider by the time the district starts to negotiate teachers' contracts.
The contracts expire in August 2006.
Mahon said the possible change was discussed at a school board work session held Tuesday night.
At the meeting, the board also voted to reduce the number of van routes the district provides. The district has 16 routes. That number will be cut down to seven.
The vans are used for special-needs, parochial and private school students. Mahon said the reduction is because of the excess cost.
"Our cost got out of whack. They almost doubled last year," Mahon said.
Mahon said the district will use bus routes and make sure all the vans are filled up to cut down on costs.
Bids for the seven van routes will be put out to bid within the week, according to Mahon.
Mahon said the board also opened up several coaching positions. Positions for the head girls soccer coach, head golf coach and head boys and girls volleyball coaches are open.
