Questions and Answers With Vikki Dearing on Training for Industry Program

Posted on: Tuesday, 26 July 2005, 21:00 CDT

Jul. 26--QUESTION: What is the Training for Industry Program? When and why was it started?

ANSWER: In existence since 1968, TIP is an economic development incentive for wealth-generating companies to create jobs in Oklahoma. Through TIP, we provide customized startup training for those companies at no cost to the company.

Q: What has been one of the program's biggest success stories?

A: There are many, many wonderful success stories. The Goodyear facility in Lawton is a great example. Not only did Great Plains Technology Center do all of their startup training, they continue to partner with Goodyear today by providing a variety of training programs for their existing work force. Arty Straehla, director of manufacturing for consumer tires, has said, "I can say without exaggeration that CareerTech has been an integral part of our plant's 27-year success story."

Q: Who participates in the program?

A: Companies must be "wealth generators." That means the goods and services they create are sold primarily out-of-state, bringing new money into the state. Manufacturers, warehouse/distribution centers, business services, and research and development operations usually qualify.

Q: What are the requirements for businesses to qualify?

A: To qualify, a company must be a new or expanding wealth-generator that is creating full-time jobs with benefits.

Q: How is the program funded?

A: The program is funded through a state appropriation created specifically for TIP.

Q: What services are offered in the program?

A: Training and services are totally customized to meet each company's unique needs. TIP typically provides for instructor costs; instructional materials and instructional materials development; training supplies, equipment and facilities; job analysis; assessments; pre-employment and post employment training.

Q: Why is the program beneficial to businesses both in the state and those out of state?

A: A trained and productive work force is critical to the success of any company. Our goal is to help companies have a productive work force from the start. Beyond that, TIP is just the beginning of what we hope will be a long-term partnership to help Oklahoma companies stay on the leading edge of their industry practices.
