Dist. 220 Tax Hike to Wait Until Questions Answered

Posted on: Friday, 29 July 2005, 21:00 CDT

To get the community to support its expansion plan, members of the Barrington Area Unit District 220 Board of Education know they must first get answers to other things, like how much the project will cost, how limited the interaction between fifth- and eighth- graders will be, and how the attendance boundaries will be altered.

Board President Deb Etzel said with the district now knowing the direction it's headed, the board and administration can focus their attention on making sure the concerns raised throughout the process are addressed before asking residents to pay for it.

"We feel we need a lot more details in place before we put the (referendum) question on the ballot," Etzel said.

With that in mind, Etzel said, committees consisting of administrators, teachers and parents are being formed to take a more in-depth look at some of the issues surrounding the plan, including curriculum, finances, school climate, busing and attendance boundaries.

"We need to tie up as many loose ends as possible," Etzel said, noting they hope to have most of the work done by October and November, with the attendance boundaries being finalized by the end of the year.

The committee's work will start in earnest once school starts up again next month.

In an effort to reduce crowded classes, the school board voted last month to build two new middle schools, as well as adjust the grade configurations at the elementary and middle school levels.

Under the new plan, grades five through eight will attend the four middle schools in the district, with kindergarten through fourth grade at the eight elementary schools.

The board has indicated it plans to ask for a tax-rate increase through a referendum in March 2006 to pay for the building and operating costs of the new schools.

More information on the facility expansion plans and the board's reasoning are posted on www.cusd220.lake.k12.il.us.
