Aug. 4--Twenty-two people applied Wednesday to take courses that Northern State University of Aberdeen will offer in Huron starting Aug. 30.
"That's a very good start," said NSU spokeswoman Brenda Dreyer. "It's more than we expected." The people applied at pre-registration event in Huron. It means all four classes NSU had planned to offer in Huron this fall semester will be held, she said. Class locations will be announced next week.
Many of those who applied plan to enroll in more than one course, Dreyer said. A second pre-registration event will be held Wednesday at the same location -- the Cornerstone Career Learning Center in Huron.
Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
NSU has never before offered classes in Huron. They came about largely because of the closure earlier this year of Si Tanka University in Huron. The private school closed mainly due to financial problems.
Students who applied Wednesday said they were excited to see affordable, state-run higher education come to Huron, Dreyer said.
Judging by the turnout on Wednesday, "There's obviously a need and people are embracing the opportunity," she said.
The Huron effort is related to NSU's Margin of Excellence Initiative, a strategic plan designed to enhance educational opportunities provided by NSU.
