Kenya: Twenty-Eight School Girls Reportedly Pregnant in Two Districts

Posted on: Thursday, 4 August 2005, 06:00 CDT

Text of report entitled "28 schoolgirls pregnant in two districts" published by Kenyan newspaper Daily Nation website on 4 August, subheading as published

The high rate of pregnancies among primary schoolgirls is raising concern in Bureti and Gucha districts.

Twenty-eight pupils in two schools are pregnant. Ten are pupils of a school in Bureti and 18 are in a school in Gucha.

But Bureti District Education Officer Francis Onyango said only eight cases had been reported in his area, and that the pupils were still in school despite their parents' confirmation that they were pregnant.

"We have launched investigations into the matter, and appropriate action will be taken against those responsible," he said.

Situation out of control

A Bureti parents and school committee chairman, Mr Joseph Ndajira, said yesterday the situation was getting out of control.

Members blamed the teachers and the school administration for, according to them, turning a blind eye to a deteriorating situation.

In Gucha, 10 pupils of a primary school are on the delivery- waiting list. Some of their teachers are said to be the boyfriends.

A girl found procuring an abortion told District Commissioner Samuel Kilele a few days ago that she was impregnated by a teacher, while another said her secondary school boyfriend was responsible.
