Aug. 9–Aberdeen public school meal prices on rise

Breakfasts and lunches at Aberdeen public schools will cost more when school starts in two weeks – in some cases 10 percent or more.

These are higher increases than ideally desirable, said school board President Brad Olson. “Even so, you’d be hard pressed to find meals of this quality for these prices anywhere else, even if you prepared them at home,” he said.

The board unanimously approved the increases on Monday night. The new prices, followed by the old, are:

–Elementary lunch: $2.10; $2.

–Middle school lunch: $2.25; $2.15.

–High school lunch: $2.50; $2.20.

–Elementary breakfast: $1.60; $1.45.

–Middle school breakfast: $1.75; $1.60.

–High school breakfast: $1.90; $1.65.

–Adult lunch: $3.25; $2.80.

–Adult breakfast: $2.10; $1.80.

The increases are expected to generate about $40,000 in additional revenue. That will be enough to balance the food service department’s proposed budget of $1.257 million for the 2005-06 school year, said food services director Susan Nash. Her department had a shortfall of about $23,000 last school year.

The district raised meal prices last year, too. General inflation, including the rising cost of food, makes the increases necessary, Nash said.
