Aug. 11--BILOXI -- Nursing programs throughout South Mississippi got a boost Wednesday from a local hospital that made donations to area nursing schools.
Officials with Biloxi Regional Medical Center donated $70,000 each to health-care programs at the University of Southern Mississippi, William Carey College and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.
"Our ultimate goal is to make a positive difference in nursing," said Tim Mitchell, chief executive officer for Biloxi Regional. "Considering the effects the national nursing shortage has had on many medical facilities . . . the hospital feels a great need to be a part of helping to prevent that."
Representatives from all the schools said the money will help improve their programs.
"It's so exciting to celebrate our partnership with Biloxi Regional," said Katherine Nugent, director of the USM School of Nursing. "Without the clinical experience and the help of the nurses being mentors to our students, we couldn't provide a truly quality education."
Larry Kennedy, president of William Carey College, said the funds will be used to help construct a new nursing building.
Willis Lott, president of MGCCC, said the money will help the school improve its program.
"This is helping us become a world-class associate degree nursing program," he said. "We know that nurses save lives."
