Posted on: Friday, 12 August 2005, 18:00 CDT

Union Public Schools has created a new position to oversee the social and emotional well-being of students, and an assistant principal has been named at Union Intermediate High School.

The positions were approved at a Union Public School board meeting July 11.

Marla Robinson, who was named director of student services for Union Public Schools, will oversee counselors, nurses, social workers and student assistance programs.

John Federline was named assistant principal at Union Intermediate High School, 7616 S. Garnett Road.

Federline returns to Union, where he graduated in 1988.

"I knew I wanted to be a teacher when I grew up and didn't know where I would wind up. I feel very fortunate to be here," Federline said. "Union has shown so much growth in the last decade. It's one of the premiere districts in the state. Hopefully, I can make a positive contribution."

Federline earned his bachelor's degree from Oklahoma State University in 1993 and went on to earn his master's degree in curriculum and instruction there in 2002.

Federline arrives from Bixby High School, where he spent 11 years teaching high-school history and geography. He spent 2003 as an administrative intern at the high school.

Robinson has spent 13 years in education.

She taught at Alice Robertson Middle School in Muskogee and Muskogee High School.

For the past four years at Union, Robinson served as assistant principal at Union High School. Previously, she was secondary language arts curriculum specialist and a secondary English teacher.

Director of student services is a new Union position with a supervisory role. The position will serve the health, social and emotional needs of students while also serving as a liaison for the community.
