Boston's Newman School Uses City As Classroom to Develop a 'Whole' Student

Posted on: Tuesday, 16 August 2005, 06:00 CDT

BOSTON, Aug. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The mission statement of Boston's Newman School encourages students to explore "the connection between intellectual and personal development," an objective students and faculty of this private college preparatory school take to heart.

Nestled in the heart of Boston's residential Back Bay, Newman students are not obsessed with standardized test scores or competitive college admissions. They participate in a program focused on the whole student.

The results: test scores and college admissions follow naturally from this approach. Recent graduates attend such schools as Harvard, California Institute of Technology, Tufts University, Purdue, and Boston College.

"While truly rooted in the Western intellectual tradition, Newman understands the needs of contemporary students to be computer literate and aware of an increasingly close-knit global community," says Headmaster J. Harry Lynch.

Contributing to this all-encompassing development of the student is an approach that includes innovative courses such as Gallery Methods and History of Boston, regular use of the Boston Public Library, attendance at professional theater and symphonic performances, and most importantly, the experience of Boston as the school's classroom.

Located in the city termed "The Athens of America," Newman is a destination of choice for dozens of international students whose perspectives on arts, politics and religion colors the school's academics. Language classes visit bilingual schools and take tours of Boston conducted entirely in French or Spanish.

School-sponsored trips also offer opportunities to travel abroad. Recently, 22 students attended classes in Italy and traveled to the Alps, Florence, Venice, and Milan. The integration of art and architecture, along with history and literature, helps Newman students appreciate the complex factors that contribute to the development of human culture.

Newman's unique environment develops students who are interested and passionate about pursuing college studies and contributing to the betterment of their world. Understanding that each student has their own strengths and interests, the school's faculty is committed to reaching each student in a way that will be most conducive to their success.

Newman is not simply a school, but instead is an engaged and engaging intellectual community, and a vital component of a city boasting a wealth of cultural, business, scientific, educational, and historical resources. http://www.newmanboston.org/
