Mansfield, Texas, School District Enrollment Surges Past Expectations

Posted on: Monday, 22 August 2005, 18:00 CDT

Aug. 20--MANSFIELD -- Mansfield school district enrollment reached 25,000 students during the first week of school, district leaders said Friday. Officials had expected the district to peak at 25,400 students in October and were amazed when the numbers kept climbing during the first few days of school, they said.

"It was a surprising week," spokesman Terry Morawski said.

Mansfield is often considered the second-fastest-growing school district in the state. It opened two new elementary schools this month.

On Tuesday, a demographer told trustees that she expected the district to more than double in size in less than 10 years and to reach nearly 60,000 in enrollment by the 2015-16 school year. Three years ago, the district had fewer than 20,000 students, officials said. Morawski said it is too early to say how reaching 25,000 so early in the year will affect the growth. Most of the district's new enrollments have been at the elementary level, he said.

"At this point, we're still predicting [25,400] as the max but have to see how that shakes out later," he said.
