WINTON — Judging by the reactions, the lunch served by a Central Southland College year 13 hospitality class was the highlight of a trip to Winton by Otautau primary school pupils this week.

About 50 parents, teachers and pupils spent the day in Winton following up classroom studies.

At Westpac bank’s Winton branch they saw the inner workings of an ATM.

At school the pupils operate a primary enterprise programme (PREP), running their own bank using currency called bloops. The children elect executives, devise business plans and sell products.

Principal Jan Tinetti said the aim was to make them familiar with how business operates and give them an understanding of the economy.

A visit to a motorbike business, a supermarket and lunch served by a Central Southland College year 13 hospitality class rounded off the day.
