State Schools Deputy Chosen

A former Kanawha County teacher was appointed as the state schools deputy superintendent Thursday. Jack McClanahan was officially chosen as deputy superintendent of the state Department of Education late Thursday afternoon by state Superintendent Steve Paine.

McClanahan has worked as acting deputy superintendent since Paine left the position to replace outgoing Superintendent David Stewart. He also worked as assistant superintendent for the Division of Administrative Services within the education department.

Previously, McClanahan was the executive director for the Office of Professional Education. He began his education career with Kanawha County Schools, where he worked as a teacher, principal, associate superintendent and deputy superintendent.

McClanahan will begin his new position on Monday.
