HARID grad gets bronze medal
Hanae Seki, a recent graduate from The HARID Conservatory in Boca Raton, was awarded the Bronze Medal at the New York International Ballet Competition. The 18-year-old performed the pas de deux from La Fille Mal Gardee and the Santanella Pas de Deux with her partner and fellow HARID graduate, Gleidson Vasconcelos. She also performed a solo piece created specifically for her by Montreal choreographer Mark Godden entitled Sway.
Seki is a native of Negano, Japan, where she was a student of Tukada Tamae Mihori. She was invited to join the not-for-profit private dance high school by Victoria Schneider after Schneider watched Seki's gold medal performance at the 2003 Japan Grand Prix.
The school's director, Gordon Wright, traveled to New York for the competition.
"Hanae's schooling was clearly evident in the clarity and sureness in her technique, and in the purity and correctness of her classical style," Wright said. "I was also impressed by the manner in which she and Gleidson engaged one another during their pas de deux. They expressed a youthful honesty and joyfulness that, I think, reached and moved the audience. Hanae was simply beautiful, and I'm very happy that she was recognized with an award."
Hanae Seki hopes to remain in the United States and dance professionally with a major ballet company.

Episcopal school gets $5,000 donation
On June 9, as the last of the Patel children graduated middle school from Saint Joseph's Episcopal School, the family patriarch donated $5,000 to the school where seven of his family members grew up.
Raj Patel's donation will be used to purchase an Accelerated Reader program for the library.
Patel's nephews, Jagir and Jesal, graduated in the 2005 eighth- grade class, joining the ranks of other family alumni Chandi, Yaval, Shire, Nichant and Rahkee. Nichant Patel ('96) is a medical student at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and spoke at the 2005 commencement activities.
The Patels of Delray Beach have supported SJES in the past, donating a portion of their sales from Saint Joseph's ice cream cones at the Delray Affair. The cones were on sale by SJES parent Dushyant Patel, owner of the Casino Dairy and Juice Bar in Lake Worth. For every $3 cone sold, SJES received $1 to benefit its academic programs. Patel made more than $2,200 during the weekend festival.
The Accelerated Reader software that interactively quizzes students on reading comprehension will help SJES students learn to read faster and better.
Raj Patel (father of Shire Patel) was given the SJES' Head's Award by interim Head of School Laura C. Walker, in recognition of his family's commitment and support to the mission of the school and its students, faculty and families.
