STUDENTS across Warwickshire were today making plans for the future after receiving their all-important A-level results.
Immediate plans were for a few celebratory drinks with friends while longer term aims were to get the university places they had hoped for.
For a few there were tears of sorrow but for the majority it was tears of joy as pass rates reached record highs.
Tom Simpson, aged 18, from Home Close, Bubbenhall, a student at North Leamington Community School and Arts College, in Binswood Avenue, got A grades in general studies, maths, geography and environmental science, and a B in physics.
He said: "It's always been that I am quite laid back but I had a big grin across my face when I was reading through what I had done."
He said he planned to study geography at Durham University and is thinking of doing a phD after that.
"But first I will be going out with a few friends in Leamington tonight to celebrate," he said.
David Hazeldine, head teacher of North Leamington Community School, said: "Not only is the whole debate about 'easier' A-levels an insult to the dedicated efforts of today's students and teachers, but it is also simply an irrelevant appeal to return tothe elitism of the past."
Ioan Morgan, principal of Warwickshire College was delighted with the results of his 150 A-level candidates.
The college beat the national average with a 98.2 per cent pass rate, with 38 per cent of candidates gaining grades A or B. He said: "We are pleased because many of the students are second chance students who have been let down by the school system and asizeable number are now going on to the university of their choice."
Lawrence Sheriff School, in Clifton Road, Rugby, enjoyed a record pass rate of 99 per cent with 59 per cent of students getting A or B grades.
The school specialises in maths and computing, subjects in which 75 per cent of pupils got A and B grades.
