The 2005 Graduate School Fair-For Students and Professionals
Posted on: Saturday, 27 August 2005, 03:01 CDT
Clinicians who are interested in pursuing a PhD should be at the Graduate School Fair at the 2005 ASHA Convention. The fair will be held Nov. 18-19 from noon-4 p.m. each day. Doctoral programs will be featured on Thursday and master's programs on Friday.
The event is co-sponsored by ASHA and the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA). During past conventions, more than 800 students and clinicians have visited the fair.
Member Focus Groups were conducted in 2004 to address issues related to the doctoral shortage. ASHA members who participated in those groups indicated that some barriers to pursuing a PhD included "difficulty identifying the right program," the need for "more information about faculty," and "a central source to match students and universities."
The Graduate School Fair does all that and more. It is "one-stop shopping" for clinicians to learn about doctoral programs. You will be able to speak with current faculty about interests and concerns.
Why professionals should attend:
* Discover 33 institutions offering 83 PhD degree programs in communication sciences and disorders.
* Meet with faculty representatives who will be available both days from noon-4 p.m.
* Ask questions about getting a PhD. Doctoral programs on Thursday.
* Learn about funding opportunities.
* Find out about faculty interests and research emphases at various universities.
Why current students should attend:
* Communicate with any one of the 80 academic institutions representing 222 different degree programs.
* Learn more about both master's and doctoral education.
* Ask about full time/part time and distance learning opportunities.
* Talk with faculty about funding opportunities and affiliated clinical training opportunities.
Participating programs will be listed on the ASHA and NSSLHA Web sites in advance so prospective attendees will be able to choose which programs to visit. For questions or more information, e-mail academicaffairs@asha.org.
