Enrollment Numbers at Grand Forks, N.D., Schools Off Slightly
Posted on: Tuesday, 30 August 2005, 18:00 CDT
Aug. 30--First-day enrollment numbers at Grand Forks Public Schools could be regarded in a half-empty, half-full light down 60 students from the first day of school in 2004, but up 102 students over the last day of school last May.
First-day enrollment was 7,579 students on Monday, the first day of classes for grades K-9 in Grand Forks.
Students in grades 10 to 12 will report for their first day today, so firm high school numbers were "still pretty gray," Superintendent Mark Sanford said.
Overall, Sanford said, school officials were pleased because first-day numbers were "slightly more than we had anticipated." Families are asked to register their children well before school starts. Still, there always are unregistered students who show up the first day, and registered children who don't show.
Changing registration numbers meant Grand Forks still was hiring teachers in the last two weeks to meet enrollment needs.
MORE ABOUT THE NUMBERS:
--Enrollments went up at Phoenix, Lake Agassiz and West elementary schools and at South Middle School. Enrollments went down at Century and Wilder elementary schools and at Schroeder and Valley middle schools. Other building enrollments stayed about the same.
--Enrollment figures don't include 55 preschool children who receive services through the Grand Forks Public Schools special education program, or the 280 Head Start children.
Three private elementary schools also opened their doors Monday:
--Riverside Christian School in East Grand Forks had 75 children preschool through grade 8.
--In Grand Forks, Holy Family Elementary School had 108 K-6 children, an increase.
--First-day numbers weren't available Monday at St. Michael's Elementary School.
