Test Scores Climb at South Carolina State Universities

Posted on: Wednesday, 31 August 2005, 18:00 CDT

Aug. 31--Having an average SAT score in South Carolina is unlikely to win a student a place at one of the top state universities.

At 993, the average SAT score for a high school senior falls well below the average SAT of 1165 for University of South Carolina freshmen this fall, or 1224 for entering freshmen at Clemson University.

USC director of undergraduate admissions Scott Verzyl said USC does not have any official minimum SAT for admission. Some students with low SAT scores (by USC standards) sometimes win admission with offsetting high performance in the classroom.

"My best advice is to focus on your school work and to do well academically. Students who do well in the class tend to do well on standardized tests," Verzyl said.

"If a student falls below 900 on the SAT, we'd be concerned."

This fall, 75 percent of entering USC freshmen scored above 1070, which is 77 points above the state average for high school seniors who took the test last year.

Perhaps the best indicator of what it takes to win admission to USC is the middle 50 percent of students; they scored between 1070 and 1250 on the SAT. That means 25 percent had SAT scores below 1070, but Verzyl said those students would have to demonstrate "exceptional" grades, a solid B average, to win a place in the USC freshman class.

USC's most academically accomplished students, those in the Honors College or Capstone Scholars, score substantially above the state average. At Clemson, the freshman class average SAT jumped 20 points this year over last year's, to 1224 from 1204.
